Fresh GeeX

FRESHGEEX is Aliyah DeVaughn, and Matt Vorzimer. The two met six years ago at the New School Jazz Department in New York. Aliyah, who was born in Philly, knew they were “connected by a moving force” (having randomly been placed them in the same dorm room the at New School.) The following year, Matt, who hails from Boulder, Colorado collaborated with Aliyah in the hallowed halls of music school. It was there that the foundation was set.
Aliyah and Matt maintained their friendship after their tenure at New School. They were able to get jobs teaching, writing and playing in various bands. The two also shared musical influences such as RZA/GZA, Raekwon, Donny Hathaway, Quincy Jones, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield, Bilal, Kim Burrell and Common, to name a few. One day Aliyah called Matt and suggested they put a five song demo together just for the hell of it. “The moniker,” offers Matt “came from the fact that we’re all super intelligent cool kids with style and talent. We didn’t want to be called Jazz school drop outs or music school misfits – it just hit us, we’re FRESHGEEX.”
In 9 months FRESHGEEX managed to put together two very impressive mix tape plus a gushing 12,000 profile views on myspace from their mix tape "808s and Chump Dates" leak, no easy feat for a new band, and clearly a testament to their combined creative talents. The songs featured on the site are a slight taste of what the potential for this band/production song writing power house has to offer. Although FRESHGEEX are a committed band, the duo also add their individual “FG” flavor to other projects as well. Aliyah has worked and or played with Bilal, Benny Golson and Tiombe Lockhard and Matt gigs and tours with Bobby Yang his band ADM and his jazz group the Park Foundation.
When asked to describe their music, Matt adds, “we call our sound SOP, short for soul/pop/house.” “We just get together and record whatever it is we’re feelin’ at the time” remarks Aliyah. “Yeah, the single “Uh Oh,” came about when I was in a club with a lady friend who surprised me with her dancing skills my first thought was “uh oh,” the rest of the song speaks for itself.
Whatever your listening appetite hungers for, soul, pop, house, you name it – they have it for you – FRESHGEEX style.
