Nappy Roots

Nappress
Country and proud of it, Nappy Roots formed in 1995 around a sextet of students attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Four members of the group were Kentucky natives (Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and Big V), bolstered by a pair of Oakland-born transplants (R. Prophet and Milledgeville).

Nappy Roots began making music together at a local record shop-cum-studio named ET's Music, and released their full-length debut, Country Fried Cess, in 1998. Drawn to the group's distinctive twist on Southern bounce, the major labels began flocking, and they eventually signed to Atlantic.

Their first album on Atlantic was 2002's biggest selling hip-hop album, "Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz". The multi-platinum album featured the hit-singles "Headz Up", "Awnaw", and "Po' Folks". The "Awnaw (Remix)" ft Marcos of P.O.D. appeared on Madden 2003. and the follow-up, Wooden Leather, arrived one year later. After several delays, the group released its anticipated album The Humdinger in August 2008; it was the first not to feature R. Prophet, who had left the group to pursue a solo career. Their second album as a quintet, The Pursuit of Nappyness, was issued two years later.

The group has sold over 5 million records, has 2 Grammy nomination, 1 MTV Video Music Award nomination, 2 American Music Award nominations as well as a Soul Train Award nomination.

Class of 2000 and forever..

Chorus (x2)

At first you don’t succeed try it all again
I die before I quite so indeed ima win
til the fat lady sing her last note in the hymn
Dont worry bout me ima grind till then

Verse 1
They say fame is like Cheers where everybody knows your name
Success at any level has the feel I cant explain
You win some , you lose, its on how you play the game
but you gotta know the rules and these dudes are insane

If you make it to the top, congrats, good for you
you dont have to sell drugs, you can do it through school
you can make it by your damn self, its better with your crew
but choose your team wisely, don’t pick a bunch of fools

Ya gotta motivate through your hate infested lakes
maneuver through the snakes and the sharks white and great
they was with you from the start, is always what they say
watchin every step along the way that you take

Nobody’s perfect, see we all gon make mistakes
ya live and ya learn, fast life pump ya brakes
last night’s not today and right now is not tomorrow
livin for the moment then your time is already borrowed

Chorus (x2)

If first you don’t succeed try it all again
I die before I quite so indeed ima win
til the fat lady sing her last note in the hymn
Dont worry bout me ima grind till then

Verse 2
My Story...

Fish scale bumpin
Murderville jumpin
must be a rap cuz we ballin up somethin
packin up my bags in my old cheverolet
and if they ask where im goin say im bringin it back to the A

State trooper got me
beat me like Rodney
left a big city turn a saint like Shockey

didnt have much but what the good Lord could spot me
ask where im goin say im bringin it back to the A

Music stop sellin
friends start bailin
im failin everything not to mention im a felon
My cousin doin time and I dont kno wat I should tell em sides
keep ya head up cuz im bringin it back to the A

Small time country boy
big city dreamer
double wide trailer pickup truck and a beamer
tunnel vision driver honk your horn if you see us
if you wonder where im goin bro bringin it back to the A

Chorus (x2)

If first you don’t succeed try it all again
I die before I quite so indeed ima win
til the fat lady sing her last note in the hymn
Dont worry bout me ima grind till then
